Ouch.....!

In an earlier post I mentioned that all of a sudden I have lots of time to sit around... well here is the story. On Friday May 28th, I was busy cleaning the house. The kids and I had just finished vacuuming when I noticed the wind was blowing really hard and ripping the net to our trampoline off. So in a panic I hurried outside barefoot and got on the trampoline to take the poles off that hold the net up. While I was hurrying I lost my balance and started falling. As soon as I started I knew this was going to be bad because I was heading right toward the window well. Well I landed and my right foot hit the grill of the window well with a lot of force. As soon as I looked at it I knew something was wrong. It was a bit deformed. I laid on my back for a while just clutching my foot thinking to myself "What am I going to do?" Luckily we had had a family home evening a few weeks before talking about what to do in case of an emergency, like if I got hurt and was not able to get help. So the kids kind of knew what to do. I had Jacob run next door, but they were leaving and didn't realize we needed help. Which was fine because I then had Jacob find my phone while I was able to hop inside and sit down. When I had the phone I called my mom and luckily she was just up the street a few miles at the Layton Wal-Mart. So she was able to get here quick. While we waited for her I was able to get myself some Ibuprofen and to the couch before I passed out(which I have a tendency to do when I am in a lot of pain). I also called Doug while I was waiting and told him that I thought I broke my foot. We figured that I would just keep him posted and he would come home as soon as he could. So that's where I was when my mom came. She loaded the kids up and then dropped them off at Camillia's. Which was so nice that she was home and able to watch them on such short notice. Trying to avoid having to go to the emergency room, my mom and I called around to a few places and my mom was able to get me in at the Tanner Clinic in Syracuse. They took me back and immediately did an x-ray. In my mind I really just figured it was broken because it looked disformed and I couldn't figure out what else it would be. But when the nurse brought the x-ray up on the computer for us all to see it all made sense. The bone that connects to my little toe had been dislocated and shoved into the bone next to it and that bone was pushed to the bone next to it also. So as the doctor looked at it he called a specialist at the Tanner Clinic and they studied the x-ray together, which was kind of neat. The specialist noticed some fractures in a couple of bones as well and they both decided that I needed those bones moved back tonight. So we went over to the Layton Tanner clinic and the specialist decided to go ahead and numb up my foot and try to move the bones back without having to do any surgery. It was really nice having my mom with me through this whole thing. Although she did have to leave the room when they started numbing my foot. And I have to say that was probably the worst pain I have ever felt. And I have had three children. It was excruciating. But once it was numb it was so nice. So we went back out to the waiting room for an hour and a half and allowed him to see all of his other patients for the day since he was just working me in. Doug showed up just before the doctor was ready for me and was so nice to bring my mom and I Panda Express as we were both starving and tired of sitting at the doctor's office all day. When the doctor was ready for me he checked to make sure it was numb, which I was really concerned about, and it was. Then he grabbed it and squeezed it and tried to get those bones back in place. There was a lady there taking live x-rays as he went. He got all of the bones back to his satisfaction without too much trouble. One bone is a little out of place but it will be fine and it would be better not to do surgery. Which I was fine with. Surgery is no fun. Then he just wrapped it with a bandage really tight. (I feel like a girl from China that had her feel wrapped really tight so they would not grow any bigger.) And he told me to use my crutches and no weight on it. Then he wanted to see me in a week to do another x-ray. He said it should heal up in about 6-8 weeks, which is about the same time Doug will be at his 6 month mark for his knee which means he should be at a full recovery also. It really turned out to be not bad at all. Throughout this whole experience I really saw and felt the hand of the Lord as everything fell into place and I was able to have my children taken care of while I got the help that I needed quickly. And the doctor's were able to take care of me and get me all fixed up. It has been a little challenging having me laid up. Doug wasn't able to get as much done with the yard and house that he wanted this long Memorial Weekend, but he has been great to help me out a ton and take care of the kids. I haven't been able to do things that I wanted to do, but it is teaching me patience. My family has been so helpful and has taken really good care of us.
We did have a nice Memorial Day and were able to go to Camillia's and Spencer's for a nice barbecue. Doug went to work today but the day went really well. I have figured how to get up and down the stairs with Isaac and Jacob and Brynlee have been a great help! I feel very blessed to have such a great family and for all of the blessings we have received in the last few days!

My foot how it looks now all wrapped in a pretty purple bandage to match the pretty purple bruising and swelling!

That was so unfortunate and painful to have happen, but your positive attitude is commendable. Take care and don't try to do too much. You have a good excuse to have others wait on you, so take advantage of it.:-) I hope your foot continues to heal well so no surgery will be needed.

oh my goodness! Shannon, I am so sorry! That stinks. But at least you're looking at it in a very positive light, that's for sure. Good luck with the rest of your recovery. That x-ray looked brutal!

You seem to be hard on feet and Doug seems to be hard on knees! I hope both of you heal quickly. I enjoyed reading your latest blog entries and catching up!
