ACL Reconstrution!

Well after two weeks of limping around, waiting for his MCL to start healing, Doug had one more appointment. Dr. Watson told him that he didn't care what the MRI looked like, his ACL was completely torn. So they decided the best thing to do would be to have an ACL reconstruction done. I didn't know much about this surgery but I just figured that they just sewed the ACL back together. I wished it was that easy. Dr. Watson gave Doug three different options for this surgery. The one he chose was to remove two strands of ligaments from his hamstring on that same leg, cut them in half, braid them together, drill a whole through his femur and tibula, and thread the graf through the holes and screw it into the bone. While he was in there the dr. was also going to fix his MCL too. So this last Thursday. Feb. 4th, Doug went in and had the surgery done. Dr. Watson said things went well and he did not have to fix his MCL. But he did have to shave some off of his meniscus that had been torn. Thank goodness for modern medicine, Doug was able to have a block put in his leg to numb it for up to 30 hours. So the first couple days he did not feel anything, but he was pretty out of it from all of the anesthesia and pain killers. The first day he slept most of the day, but the next day he was feeling a lot better. It has been 3 days now and his knee still feels pretty good. He is working from home for a couple of days and then hopefully he can get back to work toward the end of this week. He should be walking normal in two weeks and full functioning in six months. Needless to say, there will be no more snowboarding for Doug the rest of this season!

We hope the healing process goes well and that your normal mobility will soon return. What a reminder you now have of what not to do when snowboarding. :-)

Good luck! Enos had his ACL reconstructed about nine years ago, and had to have the other one done yesterday, so we're right there with you!
